Intermodal transport: sustainability and efficiency

Intermodal transport consists in sending a loan from a point of origin to a destination combining different modes of transport and without the need to handle the loan during the journey. This transport system can be used in any industry to distribute raw materials, finished products, industrial supply parts or e-commerce orders. The intermodal transport involves the use of containers that can be transferred from one mode to another, such as truck to a ship or from a truck to a train. They are intermodal containers, a type of cargo container that is easily jointed to trucks, trains, and ships for making easy the transfer of loan from one mode of transport to another.

But what are the advantages of intermodal transport in logistics?

  1. Efficiency. Intermodal transport allows carriers use different modes of transport based on cost, time, and capacity efficiencies. This way, sea transport might be slower, but is also much cheaper than air transport.
  2. Faster shipping. In intramodality, merchandise does not have to be loaded and unloads during the change of mode of transport, which leads to faster operations.
  3. Flexibility. Intermodal transport is very flexible and can be adapted to the customer’s needs. Carriers can easily adapt the modes of transport to meet the specific needs of each load. This means that carriers can offer personified transport solution.
  4. Cost reduction. The use of containers and the optimization of transport modes can reduce transport costs compared to traditional transport. In addition, intermodal transportation can also reduce the costs associated with cargo handling and storage.
  5. More security. By reducing the handling of loads, the possibility of damaging products during unloading operations decreases a lot. Furthermore, real-time cargo tracking and monitoring can also improve security.
  6. Sustainability. Intermodal transport can help to reduce the carbon footprint of the transport industry by optimizing the use of different modes of transport and reducing the amount of road transport. Also, the use of containers might reduce the amount of packaging used and minimize the waste of resources.

So, the intermodal transport is becoming a popular option because it promotes agility and flexibility in the distribution od load. Companies can combine different modes of transport to boost fast deliveries, and at the same time, reduce the CO2 emissions.
