Mercasa is a public entity under the Spanish General State Administration, the shareholders of which are the Spanish state industrial holding company Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales (SEPI) and the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment through the Spanish Agriculture Guarantee Fund (FEGA).
Mercasa provides public services for the entire food chain, particularly within the wholesale fresh food sector through Red de Mercas, but also for agriculture and fisheries to assist origin-based wholesale commercialization, the retail trade in all formats, the independent and organized catering industry and social food service companies.
Since its foundation in April 1966, Mercasa has promoted and managed the Red de Mercas comprised of 23 food divisions in wholesale distribution and logistics services throughout Spain along with the respective town councils.
