The Port of Tarragona is one of the leading ports in the Mediterranean and a key logistics hub in Southern Europe. Historically specialised in sectors such as petrochemicals, steel and agri-food products, it handles more than 30 million tonnes annually, ranking among the most important ports in the Spanish port system.
Its strategic geographical location, strong connections to major logistics corridors and diversified cargo base make it a key infrastructure for international trade and one of the Mediterranean ports with the greatest growth potential.
In recent years, the port’s strategy has focused on diversification and the development of higher value-added cargo segments, delivering strong results. This includes sustained growth in vehicle traffic, the consolidation of the paper pulp sector, and the expansion of new niches such as project cargo, live animals and cargo linked to the energy transition.
The Port of Tarragona is also working to consolidate its position as one of the Mediterranean’s main logistics hubs and a key economic driver for Catalonia, promoting strategic projects such as the PortTarragona Terminal Guadalajara-Marchamalo, the future Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL), the new multi-purpose terminal at Andalusia Wharf, and other intermodal developments aimed at strengthening competitiveness.
Sustainability and the energy transition are central pillars of its strategy. The port is implementing measures to reduce its carbon footprint, electrify its facilities, promote renewable energy and develop new cargo flows linked to hydrogen and offshore wind energy.
Rail transport development is also a key priority, essential to improving hinterland connectivity, increasing logistics efficiency and moving towards a more sustainable transport model.
