The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) is the public administration of the metropolitan territory of Barcelona, a large urban conurbation formed by a total of 36 municipalities that occupy 636 km2, where more than 3.2 million people live.
The constitution as a public administration was made on the 21st July 2011, in accordance with law 31/2010 approved by the Parliament of Catalonia. From that moment on, AMB replaces the three metropolitan entities in force until that date: the Community of municipalities of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, the Environmental Entity and the Metropolitan Entity of Transport.
The metropolitan area is a territorial, social, demographic, economic and cultural fact that has been shaped throughout the last century, as a product of the growth and connection of the urban systems that surrounds Barcelona. It is the most important metropolitan agglomeration of the western Mediterranean, where moret han half of the GDP of Catalonia is generated.
The core competencies of the AMB are related to the territory, urban planning, mobility, housing, the environment, economic development and social cohesion.
